Understanding Stress
Stress is the body and mind’s natural response to challenging situations or demands, triggering a range of physiological and emotional reactions, including heightened tension and anxiety. Common stressors include overwhelming mental pressure, major life challenges, worrisome situations beyond one’s control and traumatic experiences. Stress manifests in physical symptoms like chest pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, and psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, and panic attacks. Ayurveda provides a comprehensive method to address health problems related to stress. In Ayurveda philosophy, the manifestation of stress and anxiety is attributed to an imbalance in Vata Dosha. Addressing this imbalance becomes pivotal in alleviating stress and anxiety issues. Various factors contribute to stress, including overwhelming mental pressure, confronting major life challenges, finding oneself in worrisome situations, dealing with situations or outcomes beyond one’s control, and facing overwhelming responsibilities. Additionally, experiencing discrimination, hate, or abuse, as well as going through traumatic events, can significantly contribute to stress.
Ayurvedic Treatments for Stress Relief
According to Ayurveda, stress is the primary cause of various problems – physical, mental, social, family, relationships, economic, and spiritual. Let’s look at some of the Ayurvedic medicine for anxiety and stress:
Abhyanga
Abhyangam is an Ayurvedic oil massage therapy for stress and anxiety relief. This
stress-relieving treatment is carried out with a special medicated oil. Abhyangam treatment involves the application of oil not only on the head but also on the entire body. Abhyangam is helpful in resolving nervous system-related issues but also enhances sleep quality and strengthens immunity. This treatment is effective in decreasing fatigue, preventing ageing, and reducing the effects of deepened Vata Dosha.
Shirodhara
Shirodhara, a stress-reducing Ayurvedic therapy to treat issues pertaining to mental health involves the gentle pouring of herbal oil, medicated buttermilk, and therapeutic oils. The term ‘Shirodhara’ originates from the Sanskrit words ‘Shiro’ meaning ‘head’ and ‘Dhara’ meaning ‘flow’. This therapeutic technique involves a continuous flow (Dhara) over the head (Shiro), aiding in the removal of toxins, reducing mental fatigue, and easing stress and anxiety. Shirodhara imparts a comforting, soothing, and revitalizing impact on both the mind and body. Effective in alleviating stress, migraines, and headaches, Shirodhara induces a deep sense of relaxation.
